Invasive Meningococcal
Posted or Updated on 19 Mar 2026
We are aware of recent news reports regarding cases of invasive meningococcal disease in Kent, which may understandably be causing concern.
At present, these cases are being managed locally by public health teams, and there is no indication of an increased risk to patients in our area in the North West. Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious infection, and the NHS and UK Health Security Agency have well-established procedures in place to identify and manage cases quickly, including offering antibiotics or vaccination to close contacts where necessary.
We have received a high number of calls about this, and we would like to reassure our patients that there is no need to seek medical advice unless you or your child are experiencing symptoms.
Symptoms of meningococcal disease can include:
- Fever, cold hands and feet
- Vomiting
- Severe headache
- Neck stiffness
- Sensitivity to light
- A rash that does not fade when pressed
- Drowsiness or difficulty waking
If you are concerned that you or someone else may have symptoms of meningitis or sepsis, please seek urgent medical attention by calling NHS 111 or 999.
